Green smoothie

The green smoothie is probably the most popular smoothie order anywhere today. Of course, such as in places like South Beach or Los Angeles, it can also run you $10 or more.

Instead, simply make your own. While many different varieties exists (and you will be introduced to some variations below), this green smoothie recipe only includes seven ingredients and delivers a delicious flavor and an outstanding nutritional profile.

The idea of a green smoothie is ambitious: Bring together a bunch of vegetables and fruit into a smoothie meal and somehow make it taste extra yummy.

Well, mission accomplished, as we think you’ll find this smoothie delectable, with the right combination of sweetness, thick texture and also rather good for you. Have as a healthy snack (such as before or after a workout) or make it for breakfast.

Want to know how to eat more greens? Start here. Let's get to it.

Best Ingredients for a Green Smoothie

Here are the chosen ingredients for this sublime green smoothie:

  • Spinach — While any leafy greens will do the trick, spinach often works best for a green smoothie because this green doesn’t overpower with a bitter flavor and even imparts a bit of sweetness. You can also use baby kale. Consider freezing before using in order to produce a frosty texture.

  • Frozen banana — Want a creamy smoothie and one with the right level of natural sweetness? Then a frozen banana is a must. Just make sure that your banana is ripe before you freeze it, as that’ll create more sweetness.

  • Celery — Celery is often used in celery juice these days, but can also work in a green smoothie. It’s loaded with nutrients, in particular vitamins K and A.

  • Cucumber — Like celery, cucumber is a nutritious water-based vegetable. Using an English hothouse variety means the skin isn’t bitter. If you go with a regular cuke, you’ll want to peel the skin off before using.

  • Greek yogurt — This probiotic-filled yogurt is thicker and higher in protein than regular yogurt. It makes for a great addition to a green smoothie to add those two qualities that some green smoothies lack.

  • Almond milk — While you can use coconut milk or even oat milk, unsweetened almond milk is the best call. It’s low in calories yet includes a mild pleasant flavor and some protein and healthy fat.

  • Organic SuperGreens Berry Flavor Each scoop of this super green powder delivers 25 organic superfoods — like cleansing greens, fermented mushrooms, antioxidant-filled berries, adaptogenic herbs and more — all in an undeniably delicious berry flavor. (Our most popular new flavor.)

Green Smoothie Variations

While the combination of ingredients suggested works very well, you can also easily change it up by adding or subtracting ingredients. Here are some suggestions:

  • Add some fruit — This green smoothie recipe doesn’t include any fruit besides banana. To compliment the Organic SuperGreens berry flavor, you can add frozen berries. If you want to add more tropical flavor, consider using Organic SuperGreens mango flavor and add frozen mango, pineapple or even papaya.

  • Sprinkle in some seeds — For some omega 3 fats and some protein, consider adding chia seeds or hemp hearts.

  • Pack in some more protein — If you want to turn this into a green protein shake, add collagen protein, Bone Broth Protein, Plant Protein or whey protein powder.

  • Add more natural sweetener — If it’s not sweet enough for your taste, considering add a Medjool date or some maple syrup.
