Homemade Slushies: Berry & Lemon Lime
By Ethan Boldt
August 21, 2024
Homemade slushies are a trending drink for many folks, from the young to the old, who want a cold drink to help cool them down. Plus, they’re fun to sip on slowly with a straw.
However, while many slushies are loaded down with sugar and artificial colors — and contain only simply carbs — this homemade slushy recipe steers clear of sugar and contains real fruit alongside a collagen protein with a superfood hydration blend.
That’s right, a slushy — actually two, a lemon lime variety and a berry one — flavored with natural fruit, that contains protein and also helps hydrate you like a sports drink. Win-win-win.
Also spelled slushy or even slushee, a slushy is a flavored ice drink that you can typically drink with a straw. Also called a slush, frozen drink, frozen beverage or slurpee, it’s especially popular in the summertime and on warm or hot days.
Similar to granitas, slushies are usually made with water and flavored syrup. They often contain a fair amount of sugar but can also be made sugar-free. While healthy versions may use fruit (check out our frozen watermelon margarita mocktail), many slushies contain artificial colors.
As suggested above, rather than using sugary syrups to flavor your slushy, we’re going to go with real fruit instead. In the berry slushy, that means antioxidant-rich strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. In the lemon lime slushy, it’s the vitamin C-rich juices from lemons and limes.
Next, you’re going to add Multi Collagen Advanced Hydrate, which offers rapid hydration for your skin and body with a formula that your body can absorb faster than water alone. Matching the flavor (lemon lime or mixed berry) to the recipe, you’ll find it marries very well and mixes easily.
A real food source of balanced electrolytes and contains double what a leading sports drink does, Hydrate features a hydration superfood blend that includes Spanish red cave salt and red marine algae.
Lastly, you’ll use a combination of sparkling water and ice to get that slushy texture that’s critical.
As you can see below the recipe card, the nutrition facts for each of these slushy recipes is outstanding for a frozen drink that is usually devoid of nutrients.
The berry slushy is 69 calories, with 6 grams of carbohydrates (2 of which is fiber and only 4 grams of sugar), 10 grams of protein and barely any fat. In part because of Multi Collagen Advanced Hydrate, plus the ingredients, it contains 68 percent Daily Value (DV) of vitamin C, 27 percent DV of magnesium hydroxide and 8 percent DV of calcium.
The lemon lime slushy is 61 calories, with 5 grams of carbohydrates (only 1.4 grams of sugar), 9 grams of protein and barely any fat. In part because of Multi Collagen Advanced Hydrate, plus the ingredients, it contains 74 percent Daily Value (DV) of vitamin C, 27 percent DV of magnesium hydroxide and 8 percent DV of calcium.
This part is easy. In a high-speed blender, you’re going to add in the berries or the freshly squeezed lemon and limes, depending on which frozen drink you’re preparing.
Then add two scoops of the Hydrate powder, matching the flavor to the berry or lemon lime recipe. Blend on medium until the mixture is smooth and frosty. Add more ice if you desire an even slushier consistency, then re-blend.
Pour into four glasses and serve. Or serve two monster-sized slushies!
To store, place in the freezer in a non-glass container, as it will expand. Remove from the freezer an hour before consuming. You will need to re-blend with some added liquid.
